'My son paid friend to take his SPM' - NST

DON'T TRY TO DO THIS TRICK AT OUM

PUTRAJAYA: Nov 29, 2008 By Farrah Naz Karim

The article which appeared in the November issue of ‘The Women’s Weekly’. Education Ministry director-general Datuk Alimuddin Mohd Dom says he will look into this confession.

Can the Examination Board be duped by students who pay others to take public examinations for them?
One student from a private school did just that, according to a confession to a local women's magazine, in which a mother related her son, John's (not his real name) experience at having someone else take his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination.

He had paid his friend RM200 for each paper that he sat for, she said.

"All the guy had to do was to turn up at the examination centre with John's identity card and sit the paper he had registered for.

"I knew this friend and that he would be able to guarantee good enough results for my son to enrol into college.
"If anyone became suspicious, his friend would just insist that he was the boy in the picture and that he just looked different at 17."

In ensuring that the plan worked, she said her son's friend memorised all his details in case anyone asked.

The friend managed to avoid raising any suspicion as the invigilators failed to see the physical difference between the two boys.

"I reluctantly agreed to be at home to answer the phone in case the authorities called.

"The days of exams passed without trouble and we were glad when the last paper was over.

"Weeks later, my son received his results ... his grades were good enough for entry to a college and even qualified for one of the best courses," she said in the November issue of The Women's Weekly's monthly contributor's page "Share a Secret".

Education Ministry director-general Datuk Alimuddin Mohd Dom, who expressed disbelief that there was such a case, said he would look into the claim.

He said yesterday there was a directive for the Examination Board to be more vigilant when it came to private schools and private candidates.

This is because unlike government schools where teachers and the principals know their students, private students sitting for a paper merely have examination slips.

"When it comes to private students, invigilators would be more watchful and would check their identification against the candidate sitting for the exam.

"Details of these students are checked each time they sit for a paper."

He said there had been no reports of cheating in the past years.

Towards a safer Ipoh City - Star

Nov 28, 2008

IPOH will have at least 64 CCTV cameras installed in crime-prone areas throughout the city, said Datuk Bandar Roshidi Hashim.

The mayor said the Housing and Local Government Ministry would install and bear the cost of the system, adding that the council and police had already identified strategic sites.

Among the areas are shopping complexes, pedestrian walkways vulnerable to snatch theft, and other spots where crime might happen, he told reporters after the full board meeting in Ipoh on Wednesday.

Roshidi said this after city councillor Radzi Zainon raised concerns about making Ipoh a safer city following cases such as the killing of a petrol kiosk cashier during a robbery.

The mayor also said the council would come down hard on residents who dumped their rubbish indiscriminately at illegal dumping areas.

Among the measures, he said, was to use spies in plainclothes and to set up committees to tackle the illegal dumping problem in a more organised manner for each zone within the city.

“Dumping is becoming a big problem and I’m serious about this. We will catch those responsible and bring them to court,”he warned.

On another matter, Roshidi said the council had approached budget airline Firefly about the possibility of having flights to and from the underused Sultan Azlan Shah airport here.

He pointed out that Penang alone had six flights to Medan via various airlines.

It would be good enough if Ipoh could get flights to southern China and Phuket, he added.

During his speech, Roshidi said the Tun Razak Library was planning a book sale festival from Dec 18 to Dec 20 from 10am to 6pm aimed at encouraging the reading habit.

Bookstores MPH, Popular, Happy Learning, Kam Benar, SS Mubarak and Prima are expected to participate in the festival which will feature drawing and storytelling contests.

He also announced that the council had as of October spent RM92.1mil for development and administrative expenses, out of an allocated RM122.7mil this year.

Hadir sama Canselor OUM, Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah; Menteri Pengajian Tinggi, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin; Pro-Canselor OUM, Tan Sri Azman Hashim dan Naib Canselor OUM, Tan Sri Anuwar Ali.

STRONG shifting winds and a drizzle failed to stop Nurul Ain Md Isa from winning the Malaysian Match Racing Championship yesterday and securing a wild card into the Monsoon Cup on Dec 3-7 at Ri-Yaz Heritage Resort and Spa in Pulau Duyong.
The Perak Sailing Team captain, who was unbeaten in the round-robin series, continued her fine performance in the first semi-final with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Navy 2 captained by Mohd Masyuri Rahmat.

Nurul Ain, 23, was however, pushed to the limit in the final race by the Razman Mat Ali-captained Team KFC who earlier managed to hold off the challenge of Navy 1 with Mohamad Razali Mansor at the helm in the second semi-final.

Aided by crew members Hazwan Hazim Dermawan, Muhammad Shaifullah, Syed Ahmad Syahmi Syed Ahmad Hilmi and Muhammad Izzat Samdin, Nurul Ain, who lost the second race, did just enough to pip Razman to the finish line in the decider.

A very happy Nurul Ain said that the fact that she had made the cut for the Monsoon Cup had yet to fully sink in.
"Otherwise, I would be scared to death at the prospect of racing against defending World Match Racing Tour and Monsoon Cup champion Ian Williams or other contenders like Sebastian Col and Mathiew Richard," she said.

"It's a good thing that four-time world champion Datuk Peter Gilmour, who is the race adviser for the national qualifiers, has encouraged me to just do my best in the Monsoon Cup," Nurul Ain added.

Nurul Ain is aware that the difference between her and the rest of the Monsoon Cup competitors is huge but then again she said the worst she could do was to finish last and that would still mean walking away with RM28,000.

Meanwhile, all was not lost for Razman and Mohamad Razali as they were both picked to represent the country in the Asian Match Racing Championship beginning today at the same venue.

The winning team in the Asian qualifiers will also earn a wild card into the Monsoon Cup. -- ZAINUDDIN MUHAMMAD

Begin with the end in mind - Stephen Covey

Posted by Richard Ng on Nov 22 2008:

The September 2008 final exam is just around the corner, Monday 24 Nov 2008 to be exact. So where are you now as far as your preparation is concerned?

* Are you ready for exam?
* Do you have a clear goal?
* Have you chart your action plan to achieve that goal?

Let me begin by quoting the second habit taken from "The Seven habits of highly effective people" by Stephen Covey - "Begin With The End in Mind".

According to Covey, the second habit is based on the principle that all things are created twice - first is the mental creation and then followed by the physical creation. The mental creation are things that happened in our environment that influence our physical creation whether through our own proactive creation or other people's agendas or circumstances or past habits.

So what you want to achieve in life or in your exam is very much depended on your personal mission. What it means is that we must have a vision or goals and then followed by action plans. Vision without action is day dreaming.

Let me share with you a simple exam strategy to help you chart your goals.

I am sure by now you are familiar with OUM's assessment system as follows:

Online Participation (OLP) = 5%
Assignment (TMA) = 35%
Mid-semester exam (Mid-Sem) = 20%
Final exam = 40%

At this period of time you should already know your OLP and Assignment marks available through your User Profile in your myLMS. And I am sure you know how you have performed during the Mid-Sem exam. The only target left is to go for Final Exam. Look at the chart below:

10-Point Plan towards attaining your goals

Example: 1

In Plan F, assuming you score the following:

OLP = 5%
TMA = 30%
Mid-Sem = 15%
Total = 50%

To score A in this subject, your final exam score must be minimum 30% out of 40%.

To score A- in this subject, your final exam score must be minimum 25% out of 40%

Example: 2

In Plan G, assuming you score the following:

OLP = 3%
TMA = 30%
Mid-Sem = 12%
Total = 45%

To score A, your final exam must be minimum 35% out of 40%

To score A-, your final exam must be minimum 30% out of 40%

To score B+, your final exam must be minimum 26% out of 40%

So whatever score you intend to achieve will depend on your action plans. What will be the action plans?

In your final exam, there are three parts: Part A (answer all questions), Part B (answer 3 out of 4 questions) and Part C (answer 1 out of 2 questions). And you know that questions in the final exam will only come our from the remaining 70% of the chapters.

Go through the past years questions and focus on those chapters from the remaining 70% of the modules. Look at the important facts and make notes. Attend any Exam Coaching or extra classes provided. Check with your friends and tutor via LMS discussion forum.

Make sure that you plan and manage your time properly. Know your exam schedule and location to overcome any anxiety. Be mentally and physically prepared for exam.

Good luck.

For OUM Perak's students, please take note that the exam will be held at 2 different centres: Jln Lim Bo Seng and MHS. Please check the announcement made in the LMS. Please ensure to print your exam slip and bring it during exam.

Suasana Peperiksaan Pertengahan Semester OUM Perak

Posted by Jamaluddin Bin Asaari (Student OUM Perak) - Nov 5, 2008

Renungan jauh dua sahabat baik , satu citarasa, satu minat.
