Job cuts least hit Perak - Star

March 28, 2009

PERAK is least affected by the retrenchment of workers because there are not many factories involved in the electronics and electrical sector in the state.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr Subramaniam said the most affec-ted states were Johor, Selangor and Penang.

“This is because there are many factories operating in that particular sector in those states,” he told newsmen on Thursday after opening a new wing of Teleflex Medical Sdn Bhd, a plant which manufactures medical devices at the Kamunting Industrial Estate in Taiping.

He said 778 workers in Perak lost their jobs following the closure of 16 companies between October and March.

Of this, he said, 10 companies were deemed small ones as they employed fewer than 15 workers.

Dr Subramaniam accompanied by the plant's group president Ernest Wasser, testing a medical device in the event.

He said 12 companies in Perak retrenched 697 workers during the period, including 498 workers who opted for the voluntary separation scheme.

Dr Subramaniam said he was happy that Teleflex Medical Sdn Bhd would hire another 200 people following the expansion.

The company currently has a workforce of 2,000 people.
