Students using Skype to contact their teachers for homework and lessons - Star
June 24, 2009
KUALA LUMPUR: School is out for a week but Form Five student Wong Voon Fei is hard at work, using Skype at home to contact his teachers for homework.
The student of Sri Cempaka International School in Cheras, which has been closed following two flu cases, is still attending classes via Internet.
Lessons as usual: Voon Fei discussing the school’s upcoming Fame musical with the head of multimedia Raphael through Skype. He also attends classes online through the Virtual Learning Environment platform. The school is closed for a week due to A (H1N1) cases.
“We are on Skype with our teachers to get our homework, which we have to do and submit by the due date.
“There is a timetable to follow, so I only chat on Skype with my teacher according to the subject period,” said Voon Fei at his home yesterday.
He was also online to discuss the school’s upcoming Fame musical with the head of multimedia, Raphael Hamzah.
However, a slow Internet connection prevented him from accessing the chatrooms on the school’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) for his history lesson.
“Today (yesterday) is the first time the whole secondary school is using the chatrooms, so there are connection problems but it will be fine on Thursday (today),” said Cempaka Group of Schools vice-chairman Dr Iskandar Rizal.
To solve the problem, he said, the teachers and students moved their chats to Skype yesterday while the VLE was used for uploading and downloading presentations, notes and information.
Sri Cempaka is the first school in the country to adopt a one-to-one learning environment, where each child has a laptop computer and is guided by the teacher via a laptop computer as well.

Govt aid extended to post-grads in private institutions - The Star
June 23, 2009 By FOONG PEK YEE
KUALA LUMPUR: Those doing Masters and Phd in all the 24 local private institutions of higher learning can now apply for Government financial aid from this month.
However, there are conditions.
An applicant must be unemployed, retrenched, without regular income or a fresh graduate.
Those doing Masters programmes will get RM10,000 and those doing PhD progammes will get RM20,000 respectively.
Prior to this, only the country’s 20 public institutions of higher learning and three local private institutions of higher learning were qualified for the aid.
The aid, part of the second economic stimulus package announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in March, would be opened to those who are below 45 (during the time of application) from now, compared to age 35 for applicants for Masters programme and 43 for PhD applicants.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Norden, in a written reply to a question from Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting (BN Kulai), as to whether the Government would extend the aid to local institutions like Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, said the applicants would also need to have a CGPA2.50 now instead of CGPA2.75 initially.
There are 10,000 places for Masters and 500 for PhD. At the Parliament lobby, Deputy Higher Education Minister Dr Hou Kok Chung said 3,377 applications for Masters and 225 for PhD had been approved until this month.

Any man can be a Father, but it takes a special person to be called Dad
To all our learners, tutors and staffs, we wish you a blessed "Father's Day" and many happiness with your family members.
Brief historical background:
The idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909.
Having been raised by her father, William Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.
In 1926, a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New York City. Father's Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1956. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. So Father's Day was born in memory and gratitude by a daughter who thought that her father and all good fathers should be honored with a special day just like we honor our mothers on Mother's Day.
Today, Father's day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June each year.

Why Mom is the best
Contributed by Ong May Sin
My mom is the best. A very beautiful message for all.
If she is still around, never forget to love her more than ever.
And if she is not, always remember her unconditional love and share it with everyone.
And always remember to love your mother because you only have one mother in your life time.

Lim Kai Ting - we are very proud of what you have done
Dear Lim Kai Ting,
Though you are gone, but your deeds are very commendable. As Malaysians, we are all very proud of you. Other fellow Malaysians should emulate what you have done by donating your organs and save many lives in the process. May your soul rest in peace.

Family fulfils teen’s last wish. The Star
June 14, 2009 By LEE YUK PENG
KUALA LUMPUR: A hit-and-run victim, who succumbed to head injuries after four days in Kluang Hospital, has not died in vain.
The family of Lim Kai Ting, 17, (pic) fulfilled her last wish and donated her corneas and bones on June 11.
She is believed to have been hit by a car in a wedding convoy while riding her motorcycle on June 7.
She had wanted to sign up as an organ donor along with her siblings and parents but could not do so because she was not yet 18 when she died.
Her body was cremated yesterday.
Special assistant to Johor Mentri Besar Gan Peng Siew, an organ pledger himself , helped the family to contact doctors on their wish.
This was the first time that Kluang Hospital had such a donation.
Lim, whose tissues were retrieved after her heart stopped, was one of five organ and tissue donors during the recent two-week school holidays.
The gifts of life from these generous Malaysians – four road accident victims, including Lim, and one from sudden death – benefited more than 30 people.
Six kidneys retrieved from three dead donors – a 17-year-old boy in Kuantan, a 53-year-old housewife in Ipoh and a 37-year-old hawker from Kajang – were transplanted into six renal failure patients.
Of the six patients, two were teenagers, aged 16 and 14 years respectively, while the others had been on dialysis for between seven to 13 years.
“The feedback I received is that all six transplanted kidneys are functioning well,” said National Transplant Resource Centre procurement chief Dr Lela Yasmin Mansor.
Four pairs of corneas would enable eight patients to see. Two had been transplanted onto patients in Hospital Kuala Lumpur and another two in Sungai Buloh Hospital.
Dr Lela said the family members of the deceased had initiated the donation and she was moved that public awareness on organ donation was at last showing results.
“We will be going to hospitals to give talks to enhance organ donation awareness,” she said.
Beginning May 28, the tissue organ procurement (TOP) team has criss-crossed the country to retrieve organs and tissues from deceased donors – flying on mercy flights into Kuantan and travelling by road to Ipoh and Kajang.
The retrieval of Lim’s organ and tissues was carried out by the Johor Baru TOP team.
“Hopefully the number of donors will continue to grow,’’ said Dr Lela.
Though you are gone, but your deeds are very commendable. As Malaysians, we are all very proud of you. Other fellow Malaysians should emulate what you have done by donating your organs and save many lives in the process. May your soul rest in peace.

Congratulation to Cheng Karmen, daughter of Cheng Keng Hak (a student of Open University Malaysia Perak Branch) who won two gold medals in the South-East Asia under-14 age group championship in KL. She also managed to break the 200m backstroke meet record enroute to her gold medal.
This is another example set by a father who is currently undergoing the Bachelor of Sports Science, who has shown his passion not only in his studies but also the sports activities of his children. Well done to Cheng Keng Hak as well.

Birmingham: Results not a surprise
KUALA LUMPUR: It was no surprise to national coach Paul Birmingham Thomas that almost half of the 21 gold medals won by Malaysia to finish second overall behind Thailand in the just concluded South-East Asia (SEA) age-group swimming championships came from the Under-14 age-group.
Nine gold medals were delivered by the swimmers in the age-group and six of them were new meet records — from Adam Lim (boys’ 100m butterfly), Ian James Barr (boys’ 100m backstroke), Cheng Karmen (100m and 200m girls’ backstroke), Christina Loh (girls’ 100m breaststroke) and Hii Siew Siew (girls’ 100m butterfly).
In the Under-17 category, Sabahans Lai Wei Li and Leung Chii Lin took home four gold medals each in the girls’ competition while James Chen was the only successful male swimmer.
Malaysia only managed three gold medals in the Under-12 category and all came from the boys’ competition. Lim Ching Hwang bagged two and Tang Chong Heng won the other.
Birmingham said that it was quite a good outing for the Malaysian swimmers, considering the size of the squad.
“We have 35 swimmers compared to Thailand and Singapore, who came with much bigger squads,” said the Australian.
“We did not have the same base as these countries and some of them had to swim multiple events. They were tired when it came to the last day.
“Most of our top swimmers have not tapered for this championships because they just finished the national age-group and Malaysian Open.
“We did well in the Under-14 and that was expected as this is where a swimmer starts to develop.”

Nurul Ain's Chances Of Going To The Olympics Still Bright

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 (Bernama) -- Asean sailing champion Nurul Ain Md Isa [who is also a student of Open University Malaysia Perak Branch] can still hang on to her dream of competing in the 2012 London Olympics as the Malaysian Yachting Association (MYA) is willing to take up her case.
MYA general manager Mohd Affendy Abdullah said the association was willing to meet Nurul Ain to discuss the help needed by the 24-year-old to realise the dream.
"We were quite dissapointed that Nurul Ain went directly to Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek recently to plead her case without discussing her plight with us first," he told Bernama here Wednesday.
Nurul Ain, who hails from Perak, had gone to see Ahmad Shabery to seek sponsorhip in her effort to garner sufficient race points to enable her to qualify for the London Games.
Mohd Affendy said MYA was willing to help Nurul Ain to be absorbed into the national team although she had once turned down such an offer.
With this, he said he hoped the sailor, who is faced with financial and other woes, would not disregard the association but instead discuss her problems with it first.
