Scholarships to boost tourism - Star

July 22, 2009

THE Tourism Ministry has set up a special scholarship programme to sponsor 30 people from Perak to be trained as tourist guides to overcome the shortage of guides in the state.

Minister Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen said there were now only 23 registered guides in the state which had 88 tour operators.

“If each tour operator needs one guide a day, we need at least 100 guides. I hope people from Perak will come forward to take up this scholarship offer.

“If there are no takers, we’ll give out the scholarships to applicants from other states,” she said, adding that the four-month course costing RM5,000 each or RM9,000 with an extra foreign language will commence on Aug 1.

Noting that there was a misconception about the profession among locals, Dr Ng said tourist guides were not only highly respected in the industry but were also highly paid by as much as RM200 per hour.

“I know of several who earn up to RM800 a day,” she told reporters in Kampar on Saturday after chairing a meeting with officials from the ministry, state tourism board, Perak Tourism Action Council and National Economic Planning Unit.

Those interested in taking up the scholarships can call the ministry’s tourism service division head Rashidi Hasbullah at 03-26963928.

Dr Ng said Perak could be developed into an interesting tourism state but needed creativity, ideas and passion from its tour operators.

“Perak is a state rich in heritage, culture, history and nature. It is famous for its many archaeological sites, royalty and food. Tour operators must know how to package them into interesting and exciting new tour packages.

“People must not see Perak as a tin mine state only,” she said, adding that the ministry would meet with local tour operators to discuss with them and guide them in developing new tour packages.

Dr Ng said the ministry was concerned that the number of foreign tourist arrivals in the state had dropped by 30% from 160,427 in the first three months of last year to 112,201 in the same period this year.

Feature: Going the Extra Mile For Quality Graduates - Tutor Connexxion

July 21, 2009 By Nazrai Ahmad Zabidi

Is OUM generating quality graduates or just graduates with paper qualifications? The acid test is simply this. Will our graduates be recruited by reputable companies? According to the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), significant organisations "hire people who have the potential to produce extraordinary results - and people who are at the top end of the employability scale." So the proof is truly in the pudding. If the graduate is unable to display the type of quality wanted by employers and secure employment, then they cannot be called quality graduates.

According to Assoc Prof Dr Abdul Wahab bin Abdul Ghani, an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education and Languages and also the Chief Internal Auditor for Quality Management at OUM, there are three categories of learners at OUM: fresh school-leavers, in-service adults and senior citizens. All three groups study at OUM with different expectations.

For fresh school-leavers, employability and acceptance of OUM qualification are of prime importance, while for in-service or working learners, employability may not be as vital as progress in their career. Finally, there is the senior citizen category. They study for the sake of studying and are more concerned about the type of knowledge offered by OUM. Dr Wahab believes tutors should be mindful of these differences and that the aspiration of producing quality graduates should be shared with them through various trainings and seminars.

The OSI Model used by Richard Ng to teach Math

Some tutors have already taken steps to develop students towards becoming excellent graduates. One example is Richard Ng who introduced a new technique to instil the love of maths among his students. The model, known as "The Alternative Model of Blended Pedagogy for the Learning of Mathematics," won a silver medal for best paper at the Asian Association of Open Universities international conference in China recently. The model uses the online supplemental instruction approach whereby mentors are identified among learners who have shown potential in maths and then trained to guide other learners online. The mentors learn aspects that go beyond mathematics. Among others, they learn about IT in terms of how to compose online supplemental instructions. In addition, they learn the skills of becoming a tutor such as effective communication and organisation. At the end of the day, everyone benefits - the mentors gain new skills and the mentees begin to appreciate maths by learning from their peers.

Idris Ismail, an Entrepreneurship tutor from the Ipoh Learning Centre, believes that knowledge acquisitionsis not a one-way street. So, for instance, if the topic is creativity as a requirement to become an entrepreneur, the tutor can encourage the students to refer to many sources such as books, online materials or even from their own working experience. Idris also inserts news clippings on issues related to entrepreneurship in myLMS. His efforts encourage the love for reading. Students in his class are also expected to know more than what is contained in their course materials.

Extra effort by tutors can go a long way. It involves not just empowerment of learners but guided empowerment. During tutorials, learners not only learn the course materials but learn new skills as well such as IT and communication. In the above examples, the learners even study after tutorials; they get excited because they feel like they are part of the learning process. Hence, tutors should be innovative. They should engage the learners in the learning process so that they will acquire more knowledge beyond the course material - ultimately becoming quality OUM graduates.

Partial solar eclipse can be observed in Msia tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: This century’s longest total solar eclipse can be observed as a partial solar eclipse in Malaysia between 8:23am and 9:48am on Wednesday.

However, it would be difficult to view the phenomenon with naked eyes as only 17.8% of the sun would be obscured by the moon, head of Angkasa space science research unit Mhd Fairos Asillam said.

The northern part of Peninsular Malaysia would be the best place to observe the eclipse, he said in a statement.

The total solar eclipse, which would last for six minutes and 39 seconds, would pass through Ryuku Islands in Japan and through the Pacific Ocean, he said.

Mhd Fairos said the moon’s umbral shadow would begin covering India and then Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and China.

Mhd Fairos said Angkasa, the national space agency, would sent three officers to carry our research and take data as well as images of the eclipse in Jinshan, Shanghai, China.

Several groups would also carry out expeditions in China, among them University of Malaya, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysian Islamic Development Department, Malaysian Syarie Astronomy Association, Stargazer Scientific and Falak Online, he said.

Malaysians would be able view the live webcasts of the eclipse through the websites www.exploratorium.edu/eclipse/2009/index.html, www.saros.org/index.html and www.eclipsetv.com.

Malaysians would be able to observe a partial solar eclipse on Jan 15, 2010, March 9, 2016 and Dec 26, 2019, he said. -- Bernama

Open University Malaysia to enlarge skilled workforce - Star

July 16, 2009

KUCHING: Institutions of higher learning such as Open University Malaysia (OUM) can play an effective role in producing skilled and knowledgeable workers to help Sarawak’s economy.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said the educational opportunities offered by such institutions would contribute towards developing a highly-educated workforce for various sectors.

“To become a developed state, we cannot depend solely on infrastructure or investment. We also need a skilled and educated workforce that is productive and disciplined,” he said when opening OUM’s new Learning Centre at Princess Garden Commercial Centre, Jalan Kuching-Serian, here on Monday.

His speech was read out by state Housing Minister Datuk Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg.

Taib said OUM’s presence in Sarawak had increased the opportunities for people to gain a qualification and enhance their skills, particularly the working population.

“The life-long learning concept advocated by OUM has enabled people from various social backgrounds to continually improve their skills and knowledge,” he said.

OUM president and vice-chancellor Prof Tan Sri Anuwar Ali said the university was formed to inculcate life-long learning among the public.

“Education does not end after secondary school or university but is a continuous process,” he said, adding that OUM offered a wide range of courses in various disciplines to meet the country’s needs.

The Kuching Learning Centre is one of 14 such centres owned by OUM nationwide.

Housed in a four-storey building, it is equipped with 40 tutorial rooms, four computer laboratories, a meeting room, a multi-purpose hall, prayer rooms and student lounges.
