Ipoh-KL electric train fare RM30-35 - The Star
By ROSHIDI ABU SAMAH
BATU GAJAH: KTMB will charge a fare between RM30 and RM35 for the Electric Train Service (ETS) between Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur scheduled to be in operation in the first week of August.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said the fare was just as the goverment had taken into consideration the welfare of potential commuters.
"The fare can be considered cheap. KTMB had initially applied for a fare of RM50 but it was rejected by the government.
"We want to encourage the public to use the ETS which is more comfortable and safe compared to express bus services. That is why we want the ETS fare to be competitively priced," he told reporters after the opening of KTMB complex by Sultan Perak Sultan Azlan Shah here Tuesday.
Kong added that there would be five ETS trains that would provide eight return trips for the Kuala Lumpur-Ipoh route daily. The first train will leave at 5am and the last at 11pm.
He said KTM would increase the numbers of trips if there was a great demand for the services especially during festivals.
"We are planning to get the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) himself to launch the new train service at a date to be decided," he added.
With a speed of 140km/h, the ETS is expected to reduce travel time between Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur to about two hours from three hours previously.
Meanwhile, Kong said the new KTMB complex, built in a 75ha area, cost of about RM400mil.
He said the project was started in November 2006 and completed in November 2008.

This is the first of three volumes examining the internationalization of higher education and the Middle East. The 12 essays included in this volume explore some of the changes that are taking place and the challenges that lie ahead as Middle Eastern countries seek to build sustainable higher education systems and strengthen their economies. Within the dynamic global higher education landscape, is the Middle East a stagnant backwater or a center of creative initiative? What are, and should be the roles of foreign partners and providers? In which ways and to what extent can innovative modes of delivering educational content, facilitated by information communications technology (ICT), enrich learning? What are the broader cult implications of the adoption of Western higher educational standards and practices? How does politics inform and impede the ability of students and faculty to participate fully and flourish in institutions of higher learning? These are just some of the important questions addressed in this volume.

Government launches new scheme for unemployed graduates
SEGAMAT: The government has launched a special training scheme to equip fresh and unemployed graduates with skills required by the industries.
Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S.Subramaniam said under the scheme called Graduate Employability Program (GEP), the graduates would not only enhance their chances of employability but also become more innovative and creative.
The minister said RM10.5 million had been allocated for the GEP and it would be managed by Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Berhad (PSMB) under the ministry.
"The GEP's aim is to increase the skills and competencies of graduates to prepare them for the job market with higher salaries and to assist the less fortunate graduates who cannot find employment due to lack of skills," he said when launching the GEP here Saturday.
Dr Subramaniam said the GEP would equip, develop and assist unemployed graduates through six key skills namely, ICT; competencies; transferable skills which include communication, analytical thinking and problem-solving; relevant working experience; exploring new route for their career; and job placement.
He said the target group would be diploma and degree holders who had been unemployed for at least three months after graduation.
"The attachment component provides hands-on learning environment and because of on-the-job experience, it makes its easier for trainees to apply what has been learnt in the classroom to where they are attached to," he said.
He said the government would bear the fees for the graduates who would also be paid a monthly allowance of RM500.
He said on completion of the GEP, the trainees would secure employment almost immediately.
Dr. Subramaniam said to enlist, graduates could download application forms at www.hrdf.com.my or send their applications to PSMB. Bernama

Social networks a boon for small businesses (The Star)
Jul 9, 2010
PETALING JAYA: Many businesses are turning to social networks to better connect with their customers and attract potential clients, according to a global survey.
The survey, commissioned by workspace solutions provider Regus PLC, also found that small companies are more likely to use social networking for business purposes, And are the most successful at it.
Regus said 44% of the small companies in its survey successfully acquired new customers through social networks, compared with medium companies (36%) and large businesses (28%).
Companies that do not take advantage of social networks (such as Twitter and Facebook) may be missing out on sizeable business opportunities, Regus said.
The survey polled 15,000 companies worldwide.
